Changing your diet is hard when the rest of the household is eating something else. The good news is that small, shared changes make a big difference — and a bit of friendly competition helps.
Cook one meal, customise portions
A build-your-own bowl night works for everyone: a shared base of rice, protein and roasted vegetables, then each person adjusts their portion and toppings to their goals. The person bulking adds extra rice and avocado; the person cutting doubles the vegetables.
Make the healthy choice the easy choice
- Keep fruit on the counter and chopped veg at eye level in the fridge.
- Stock high-protein snacks like yoghurt, eggs and hummus.
- Serve water with meals by default.
Involve children
Children who help shop and cook are more willing to try new foods. Repeated, low-pressure exposure works better than forcing a “clean plate”.
Turn it into a game
Mealify's Family Cup scores members on consistency — logging meals, staying near their own calorie target, logging weight and completing nutrition quizzes — rather than on who loses the most weight. Everyone competes fairly against their own goals, and each Monday the top scorer is crowned Family Nutrition Master.
Healthy family eating isn't about perfect meals; it's about better defaults, shared effort and keeping it fun.
