Setting Realistic Goals That Actually Stick

How to set nutrition and weight goals you can achieve: outcome vs process goals, realistic rates and tracking habits.

Most goals fail not because people lack willpower, but because the goals were unrealistic or vague. Here's a better way.

Outcome goals vs process goals

"Lose 10kg" is an outcome goal — useful for direction but not in your direct control. "Eat 30g of protein at breakfast" and "walk 8,000 steps a day" are process goals — fully in your control, and the things that create the outcome.

Realistic rates

  • Fat loss: 0.5–1% of body weight per week.
  • Muscle gain: 0.25–0.5% of body weight per week for beginners.
  • Habit formation: research suggests new habits typically take around two months to feel automatic, with wide variation.

The SMART framework

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. "Eat better" becomes "eat two portions of vegetables at dinner on at least five days this week".

Start smaller than you think

Pick one or two habits. Once they're automatic, add another. Small wins build confidence and momentum.

Track and review

Review weekly: what went well, what got in the way, what one change will you make next week? Mealify's dashboard and streaks are built to support exactly this kind of weekly review.
