Barbecues can be surprisingly healthy. A few swaps keep all the flavour with far fewer calories.
Better proteins
- Chicken breast or thigh skewers marinated in yoghurt and spices.
- Prawn or salmon skewers.
- Lean beef or turkey burgers (5% fat mince).
- Halloumi in moderation, with plenty of vegetables.
- Marinated tofu or vegetable burgers.
Grill your vegetables
Peppers, courgettes, red onions, corn on the cob, mushrooms and asparagus all grill beautifully with a little oil, salt and herbs.
Lighter sides
- Swap mayonnaise-heavy coleslaw for a yoghurt or vinegar-based slaw.
- Try bean or grain salads.
- Serve wholemeal buns or skip the bun for a lettuce wrap.
- Grilled pineapple or watermelon for dessert.
Food safety
- Defrost meat fully before cooking.
- Cook chicken, sausages and burgers until steaming hot with no pink meat and juices running clear.
- Keep raw and cooked meat separate, with separate utensils.
- Don't leave food in the sun — refrigerate within two hours.
